How to go back to working out postpartum? Episode 02

In today’s episode I’d like to answer a question that lots of you are asking themselves. You gave birth weeks, months, or even years ago and you are now ready to help your body recover. You are looking for someone or a program to help you get rid of mummy pouch, strengthen your abdomen, lose baby weight and/or address any pelvic floor discomfort you might have. You just want to feel good and confident in your own body. Or maybe you are still pregnant but wonder about what’s next and want to plan ahead? How to make sure you will recover quickly enough and feel like your old self again asap?

That’s the type of questions I am answering in this episode. You can listen to it on the link below. I added some notes at the bottom of this post!

Going back to working out postpartum - what you need to know (summary):

Table of Contents

Early postpartum and postpartum recovery - what you need to remember

  • Before picking our your program, you have to see if this program or their methodology offers any kind of “early postpartum” recovery.
  • Try to see if the program or coach is specialized in postpartum recovery and pregnancy/birth prep
  • Ask questions or find answers on the qualifications/certifications and most of all experience of the coach/founder.

Abdominal and pelvic floor recovery more than muscle toning - what you need to remember

  • Is there any emphasis on abdominal and pelvic floor recovery more than muscle toning?
  • If this will be addressed briefly and not constituting the most part of your program, this might not be the best approach for you.
  • As for muscle toning, look for any mention of functional training specific to moms and the demands of motherhood.

Posture work - what you need to remember

  • What do they understand about the role of posture on your recovery?

Is there a clear plan outlined throughout your recovery program - what you need to remember

  • See yourself progressing and know when you meet the requirements to move to the next phase.
  • Having a clear plan helps with consistency and most of all motivation to keep going!

Online vs in-person - what you need to remember

  • Pay attention to your coach, is he/she looking attentively to the camera? Is she/he asking questions on how it feels when you do this or that? Is he/she trying to correct your movement especially with a new exercise?

Choosing your expert - what you need to remember

List all the points we talked about:

  • Are they offering an early postpartum program or postpartum specific approach?
  • Is abdominal and pelvic floor recovery taking lots of space in their program? What about re-strengthening, how are they envisioning it? What kind of exercises?
  • What about posture? How do they plan to help you with that if they plan to take care of it at all? Why is it important in their opinion?
  • Do they have a plan to show you? How would you be able to know if you’re progressing in the right direction?
