Episode 03: How to choose your doula?
How to choose your doula? In today’s episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Ann Fulcher, doula and head of the Hearts and Hands UCSD
Have you ever heard about galactogogues herbs? Maybe you did some research on these breast milk supply boosters or one of your friends told you to look into them. You might wonder if they are really worth it and worth the trend.
In this blog post, we will cover what are galactogogues and their actions and my favorite brand on the market (+ I added a nice promo code at the end). You can also download your free Galactogogue and Lactogenic Food Guide: I included even more, and if you need to buy these foods, herbs and spices organic and some brand recommendations.
By definition, galactogogues are herbs, foods and supplements helping to support and increase moms’ milk supply.
You can find synthetic and natural ones.
They are used to increase milk supply, help with the milk let-down – milk ejection, and also believed to help with issues related to breastfeeding, like mastitis, engorgement, etc.
As I just said, many foods and herbs are classified as lactogenic:
It is thought that this nutrient rich food is phytoestrogenic, mimicking estrogen, and contains thyroid releasing hormones stimulating prolactin and milk supply.
It has been widely used to treat arthritis, digestive disorders and kidney problems.
Almonds are wild known lactogenic and breast milk boosters. They are also believed to improve the creaminess and sweetness of moms’ breast milk.
Sprinkle them on top of your salads, in your overnight oats or add some in your breakfast smoothie!
Anise seeds are believed to help with milk let down.
Apricots, along with dates, are believed to increase prolactin, stimulating in turn milk supply. Dried apricots are apparently working even better.
Beets are high in folate, still important in your postpartum recovery and for your baby’s development, and are considered as interesting lactogenic foods.
A great way to eat more beets is as a side salad with some walnuts and almonds or an added breast milk supply booster meal!
This has been used for indigestion and loss of appetite but also as a breast milk supply booster.
Also rich in folate, and iron, they are used for their lactogenic effects among new moms. Try to add more to your daily diet, at least one portion a day. It can be added to your favorite smoothie or as a side dish.
Fennel seeds also contain phytoestrogens helping to support and boost your breast milk supply. Fennel is also interesting to use when you have any digestive issues like gas and colic, making it interesting for your baby as well.
Very popular galactogogue! However some moms report that their milk supply has gone low after using it.
Garlic is very useful for digestive issues, but also for its antibiotic properties. It is also known as being an interesting lactogenic food.
Try to add more garlic in all your food, especially when you sauteeing them!
Ginger is a well-known anti-inflammatory spice and food. It also helps with the let down reflex of breast milk and with supporting your milk supply.
Ginger is great to be used as a spice in your favorite tea or hot chocolate but also in all your marinades, soup, etc.
This herb stimulates breast tissue growth and is a widely known and used galactogogue.
Another widely used lactogenic herb. It has been used for liver and gall bladder related issues too.
Rich in iron and other essential nutrients, moringa, and especially its leaves, is an interesting lactogenic as well.
You can find some moringa powder in your grocery store and this to a smoothie for instance.
Also a very popular galactogogue and lactogenic. Nettle is full of all essential nutrients making it also a very good side kick to your postpartum recovery.
Oats are thought to contain phytoestrogens that can stimulate milk production but also nutrients that can help with prolactin stimulation.
You can add some oats to your favorite morning smoothie, do some nice popsicles with it, or enjoy nice and warm overnight oats (see this link for adaptogen filled overnight oats)
Shatavari is another well-known lactogenic. It has been used also for infertility. It also boosts prolactin and thus milk supply and production.
The well-known anti-inflammatory spice – among lots of other incredible properties – has also lactogenic properties making it an interesting breast milk supply booster.
You can add some to your smoothie but also in a meat marinade for instance.
Some of these herbs can be pretty powerful. It’s not a bad idea to always check with your health care provider first and/or your lactation consultant!
Since I have discovered Majka, I have decided to become an affiliate of their brand. They offer truly high quality supplements and powders meant to enhance your milk supply but also support your postpartum recovery as a whole.
Moreover, I chose to support their business because their mission is truly aligned with mine: support postpartum moms and elevate postpartum care.
